The laparoscopic Appendectomy is carried out with minimum invasion. Three or four incisions are done in the abdomen and through them different surgical instruments are passed.
First of all, a narrow tube called cannula is inserted to ill the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. The gas inflates the abdomen therefore giving a better view of the organs inside.
The next instrument used is a laparoscope, a narrow tube with a high intensity light camera at one end. The camera captures the images of the abdomen and the organs and helps the surgeon with image guided procedure.
The appendix is thus located and removed with minimum activity, such that it does not burst. In case the appendix has already burst, it is safely removed and the abdominal cavity is thoroughly cleaned to avoid any further infections.
Laparoscopic appendectomy is ideal for elderly as well as overweight patients, because it is promising of faster recovery.
Once the procedure is completed, the incisions are stitched and bandaged. The appendix is then sent for further tests.
Post-surgery the patient is shifted to the recovery room where vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.
Once the patient stabilises, they will be shifted to the hospital room. In certain cases, this can be an outpatient procedure where the patient leaves the hospital directly from the recovery room.
The doctor will prescribe you medicines along with pain killers.
There might be a thin plastic tube that is injected from the patient’s nose to the stomach during surgery for draining stomach fluids and air. This tube will be removed before the patient is discharged for home.
The patient will be asked to walk with support after surgery, to avoid forming blood clots in the legs.
The diet will be preferably liquid which overtime is changed to solids.
