• Excision (Surgical removal)
Most Lipomas are recommended to be removed with the surgical method that is also known as minimal excision or excision.
The Lipomas are cut out surgically after the area around the lipoma is treated to general or regional anesthesia depending on the depth and size of the Lipoma.
Excision is the only treatment that can remove the Lipoma fully. There are lesser chances of recurrence with this procedure.
The Liposuction procedure uses a needle as well as a large syringe to remove the fatty lump. The liposuction procedure is marked by recurrences. The only advantage it brings is it is scarless. Liposuction is also done under general anesthesia and the patient can go home the same day.
• Steroid injections
The steroid injection treatment shrinks the lipoma but usually doesn't eliminate it. The use and potential of injections before surgical removal remains to be studied.
Pre Surgery Procedure
Your doctor will advise you certain things to be done before the surgery-
A patient is recommended not to eat or drink anything 6 hours before the surgery.
The patient should inform the doctor of any regular pre-medications taken that might affect the surgery especially if the patient is on blood-thinning medicines, the doctor needs to be informed.
In both Excision and Liposuction, the patient should be able to go home soon after the procedure is completed, if it is a small or superficial mass. The surgery leaves behind a few stitches, which the doctor will remove in a couple of weeks' time.
The surgical site is sutured and dressed. The patient needs to restrict activities until the stitches have completely healed.
The risks associated with lipoma removal:
The patient might bleed exceedingly or might also develop an infection at the surgical wound.
At times, a pocket of blood or fluid might form under the skin which might heal on its own or require further treatment.
Post-surgery a patient should seek immediate care if –
There is bleeding through the surgical wound.
You experience fever or chills.
The wound is red, swollen, or is draining pus.
A feeling of nausea or vomiting.
The skin is itchy, swollen, or a rash appears.
