• Your doctor may advise you to follow a special diet like restricted solid foods, clear liquids a day before the procedure. 

• You will need to fast the night before the surgery or at least 4 hours before the procedure.

• You might also need to stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAID)  or blood thinners medications as suggested by your doctor.

• Any medications you take on a daily basis for diabetes, hypertension etc should be informed to the doctor.

• Your doctor might recommend taking a laxative (pill or liquid) the night before the procedure. This cleans your large intestine and gives a  better view to the doctor to inspect.

Step 1:

• Intravenous fluids or medications are injected before the Colonoscopic procedure through a cannula. 

• Your pulse, heart rhythms, Oxygen saturation and blood pressure are monitored with the help of a monitor.

• Sedatives required will be given as pills or through the intravenous line itself.

Step 2:

• A Colonoscope is inserted into your rectum under visual control. 

• The camera and light source attached to the tip of the Colonoscope sends visuals on an external monitor. 

• The doctor examines the images received for the presence of polyps or other abnormalities.

Step 3:

• If required, tissue samples are collected by inserting other instruments into the colon.

The procedure usually takes 15-60 minutes. Once the procedure is done, you shall start to recover from the sedative in an hour.
