Post-anesthesia, 3-4 incisions are made in your skin around your groin area and the hernial sac is pushed into place. The treatment also involves repairing the defect in the intestinal wall.
Sometimes a synthetic mesh is used to cover the weak part and then the skin is stitched back. It is a short procedure and is usually done within an hour.
Traditional surgery is less commonly carried out and involves a large incision in the abdominal area.
The hernia sac is then pushed back in the abdomen and the defect around the abdominal wall is repaired by using a synthetic or plastic mesh that keeps the weak part in place.
Post-surgery you might go home the same day or may be required to stay back under observation in the hospital overnight. There will be swelling around the wound and mild discomfort for a few weeks.
During the recovery phase, you should avoid lifting weights and strenuous activities for at least five to six weeks. You can resume your work in two weeks post the surgery.
It is therefore recommended to be operated well in time. Hence it is always advisable to have an early consultation with the doctor who would advise on the right treatment.
